Closure of a chapter in life

Dad's last labour of love was to prepare a nice little spot for dear ol' dog.

It's not an easy one, seeing how that spot used to be an old palm tree which we had for years, he dug up the roots, refilled the patch with earth and dug up a nice spot for us to bury Sera's remains which we received from the pet memorial services.

Can't believe it's only been a week ever since but it seemed so much longer.

Still misses all the small routines we have around the house.

Mum jokingly mentioned that she's heard of a lady who buried her dog in the garden and occasionally sit there to chat with her pet.

Printed some photos of her to put up at my workplace, so that I still get to see her everyday at work. <3

Also gave some for the bro for keeps and put some into a nice photo frame for the living room.

And I wonder, I really wonder if I'd be able to someday own another pet dog of my own. There's a lot of hard work involved in taking care of a pet, but I really do wish to be able to do once again.

There's nothing like the unconditional love to come home to everyday and a friend who will always be on your side no matter what happens.

Bratty bids farewell

Bratty here to send her love to an old friend.

Watching over the whole process was painful to say the least, and every now and then, someone tears up. The tears never does dry up, it just starts up unexpectedly. Bratty supposes crying is therapeutic, in it own way.

Bratty is grateful that both the other halves of the siblings dropped by for a short visit to say their goodbyes to the family pet, it's a small gesture that means a lot. Particularly because the siblings are very attached to Sera and dotes on her a fair bit. Sera was after all, adopted as part of the family to provide companionship to them when the parents were away at work. It's a beautiful feeling to know that there's always someone to be there for you when everyone is away.

As a child, Mistress is easily spooked by ghost tales and all those spiritual creepy stories. Reading them is fine, but Mistress avoids movies and dramas like a plague. See, when no one is at home, imaginations tend to run wild. It's always been a sort of reassurance to her to know that Sera is around, ever since she's read years back that animals are just like young children and are able to sense the unknown.

The hardest part of them all is watching Mistress and her family walk out of the room and having to go past all the stares and looks of the other owners who were dropping by for boarding or treatment for their own beloved pets. Bratty is sure they could sense what just happened in the room from all their swollen eyes and tears.

For anyone who's ever owned a pet would understand it. A pet is part of the family.

Mistress later told Bratty, how much she was amused when Daddy asked her if they should get another dog, on the drive back home. Particularly because the parents had mentioned repeatedly that all the work involved in caring for a pet would be inconvenient to them, since the siblings are busy and not home to do their share of responsibilities.

Mistress and her bro did understand that Daddy would have to spend more time to help with the household chores and looking after Mummy while Mummy would need to concentrate on taking care of her own health. It's an huge responsibility to take care of a family, and the parents had done the best they can for everyone, so it's time for them to take it easy.

A new pet would mean having to train from the very beginning, and to have to cater for new toys and routine checkups and occasional boarding when going on holidays. Committing to another 10 to 15 years is not an easy task.

That Daddy would suggest it, and when Mistress voiced her surprise, said that they would decide again after 6 months down the road. It would be highly unlikely, of course, but that Daddy brought it up himself, shows how much he misses seeing a wagging tail welcoming him from work everyday.

Mistress supposes that when she comfortably settled down into a stable career path and is financially able to having a space of her own, she would consider having a furry companion by her side again. That is, if she's yet to be saddled down with a miniature mini her, which will bring about a new priority shift.

Bratty thinks it will take a while to adjust, the siblings grew up having some sort of pet of their own all these years, from tortoises to fishes to hamsters to a dog.

It's alright, Bratty has been told that all dogs go to heaven, the family will meet Sera again when the time comes.

Till then, Bratty bids farewell to an old pal and will help Sera to continue watching over little Mistress and her family.

a letter with a piece of my heart

Dear Sera,

Today is the day we part ways with each other. When my time comes, it is my dearest wish that we will meet again in heaven.

Tears keeps falling again and again, even though I keep thinking that with all the crying I've done for the past few nights, my tears should have run dry by now. I know that I'm not alone, because everyone else is crying along with me ever since we agreed upon it together. Ever since that night I returned from Phuket and Dee informed me that we have to make a decision.

My heart hurts, there's a gaping hole in it, you've taken a piece of us with you, for being so faithfully beside us for the past 11 years.

And yet, we know that it is the right thing to do, as a family, it's heartbreaking to watch you suffer, barely gasping to breathe at time, growing thinner and thinner by the day, having to endure weekly liquid extractions and all that needle jabbing for the past year. Because we love you so much, we have decided to let you go.

We are already missing you.

From the day you were given to us as a little puppy only several months old, so far away from your parents and brothers. A spoilt little thing who insists on not eating dry dog food and not ever sleeping in the cage nor within the confine of our bathroom where we put you there only to find that you've escape from it the next morning.

Mummy dearest will miss all the morning breakfasts you snack from her as she's having all her daily nuts and fruits and bread. All the time you waited so patiently for her as she uses the bathroom late at night. Always the first one you're able to weddle your puppy eyes to make her cave in and give you whatever she happens to be eating at the moment.

Daddy dearest will miss your little games that you love to play together. I bet he'll even miss going to the pet shops to buy all your favourite treats and biscuits and cans of dog food. The first one to stock up on your food supply whenever it runs low. And possibly the person who gets up from bed most of the time to open the sliding door for you in the middle of the night when you decide on banging it, probably because the rest of us are heavy sleepers and will easily sleep through all that noise. The second person you can snack from for your daily fruits supply.

My dear brother will miss all the little hugs and pets he loves giving you, even if it's right after his showers. And I know you've got him trained as well as, because I've been hearing you paw on his door right every night right after you walk out from my room every night, to make your next nightly excursions from my room to his.

I will miss our little daily pats and ear scratches, a habit that built up from my schooling days where I would return home, flopped on the floor, pat it twice and wait for that little bundle of fur to get up and walk over to greet me. It's something that only you and I share because no one else does that but me. Seems like it's been forever that you habitually drop by my room first every night when everything downstairs is closed for the night, that everyone makes it a point to open the door for you and invite you into my room without even asking me. Probably because I tend to sleep later than the parents and is almost always the one with the air conditioner still switched on. Once you hear the 'plaaak' of the switch going off, you'd crawl out from wherever you've been napping and sleepily make your way into bedroom number two, my brother's.

We will miss your little forlorn look when you realised that you've been locked outside at night and all that banging on the sliding door to remind us that you're still outside. All that suspicious sniffing on whatever food we give you to snack, that little guard dog charade you start doing only when we're having dinner. Never learning that shouting from upstairs is not from some random person outside the house. Your daily barking at the poor postman. That warm fur you get after sunbathing in the sun from the outside. Or that wet doggone look you get after getting bathed. The overly excited atmosphere whenever we prepare to go to the vet. That you really hate the festive seasons and the fireworks it brings and the rain with all its thunderings.

Calling you with our various spur-of-the-moment nicknames, mostly from mum and I. Talking to you one on one whenever we want company or just someone to listen to.

I hope we've given you all the love you ever wanted, and freedom to wander all over the house sans the furnitures and beds.

We love you so much and we know that you love us too.

Love, your family
